Dublin Symphony Orchestra Members

Meet the conductor

Conductor passionately directing music with a baton.

André Cavanagh, born into a musical family in Dublin, began studying French Horn under the tutelage of his elder brother, Raymond, at the age of 9. Following this, he spent several years at the Royal Irish Academy of Music under Victor Malirsh before continuing his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music with Derek Taylor, Peter Francomb, and Bob Ashworth.

André is a regular performer with the RTE Concert Orchestra and the Ulster Orchestra, and has collaborated with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Cecelia, and the Orquestra Classica do Sul in Portugal. His contributions to classical music have made him a respected figure among orchestra members in various ensembles.

As a soloist, he has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and the Hibernian Orchestra, and notably alongside soprano Christiane Karg with the Orchestra of St. Cecelia.

In his role as a conductor, André has held positions with the Fingal Youth Orchestra, Blackrock College Orchestra, Blackrock Jazz Band, and Knocklyon Concert Band. He is currently the director of the Newpark Community Orchestra.

André is also a keen arranger and Musical Director. In 2016, he served as the Musical Director for a project in aid of Pieta House—a reimagining of Michael Jackson’s ‘You Are Not Alone’ that reached Number 1 in the iTunes charts shortly before Christmas that year. During lockdown, he produced several online collaborations, most notably a virtual performance of the closing minutes of Mahler’s 2nd Symphony, which featured the individual recordings of 114 instrumentalists and singers from around the country.
